I was 221 feet up in the air, with a five kilometre view all around. The restless and loud city was at its quietest and calmest from up here. Every now and then, I would look out to gaze and be amazed on how the city was so clearly diverse. The old city, with captivating architecture, the Sabarmati River, doing its part as the border and the new city, with fancy new hotels and cars. The city had different moods throughout the day. Hyper in the morning, the cars frantically driving around, the city seems calmer in the evening as they make their way home.
We were dining at the Patang Hotel in Ahmedabad, the revolving restaurant that is proudly shown off by Amdavadis. Of course they have reason too. With a 7 course meal consisting of continental, Chinese and North Indian, a variety of mouth-watering deserts, soft, soothing gazals and a splendid view, it was definitely a very hi-fi place.
We entered the hotel, wanting to have a fulfilling experience of viewing aapnu Amdavad from above. We were seated and given our drinks and starters. Not wanting to miss a chance on the rest of the extravagant of the 7 course meal, we unwillingly stopped ourselves and waited till the revolution would reach us to the buffet table. We took our time to eat and absorb the calm atmosphere. It was a wonderful place to eat. It was a wonderful place to feel at peace. Many things attracted me toward this one of its kind restaurant. I would recommend it to anyone who has the impression that Ahmedabad is boring. Firstly, the experience is different and gives you different views of the city, which are undoubtedly attractive. Secondly, I would recommend it to anyone who is a foodie and enjoys variety of food and deserts. The restaurant offers so many varieties that even a taste of each item can be filling.
While I had tasted the sophisticated side of Ahmedabad, I decided it would be about time I taste the local side of the city. As a regular tourist, hygiene and good food are two main priorities that cannot be compromised. Of course, I always crave to taste local food whenever travelling. Whether it may be Singapore, Malaysia or Dubai, you cannot truly experience the city unless you have a flavour of locality. Similar to my thinking is Vishalla Greenhouse Restaurant. The restaurant explores Gujarati tradition unlike Patang with continental options. Vishalla gives the best local taste with the Gujarati thaali consisting of various types of curry, pickle, salads, rotis, chaash and daal.Adding to the traditional attributes of this lively restaurant is the entertainment, consisting of live folk music, puppet shows and a museum. I had bought a French friend of mine, who is fascinated with Ahmedabad and India, to give her a taste of not only local food but of cultural entertainment. Keeping in mind her weak stomach, I bought her to Vishalla. The both of us enjoyed the calming ambience. We took a tour of the museum, which consisted of traditional cutlery. After our tour from the museum, we shook a leg to various Gujarati/Rajasthani folk songs and we enjoyed the music and the dance. At the end of our evening at Vishalla, I took her to see the puppet show. The puppeteer’s skill to make the puppet dance was mind boggling. We were amazed to see how he was able to make the puppet dance and sway with such precision. After a fulfilling evening of dance, shows and food, we made our way home.
Ahmedabad is very diverse, with sophisticated restaurants such as Patang and traditional restaurants such as Vishalla. Of course, for tourists who are looking for something different and traditional, both restaurants are highly recommend- ed. I guarantee you’ll take an amazing experience home.
